| General Information
2007-2008 DRIVERS EDUCATION PROGRAM
FOR THE MARTIN COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT
DRIVERS ED COURSE WILL BE OFFERED 4 TIMES during the school year.
(1 section each 9 weeks at all 3 high schools in the district.)
THIS IS A NON-CREDIT COURSE.
The students must be 15 years of age before the start of the 9 weeks in which they are going to enroll.
Students must obtain a Learner’s Permit before the 1st day of the 9 weeks in which they are enrolled to be able to operate on road vehicles and receive certificate.
On road lessons will be conducted on Monday , Wednesday , and Fridays until all students have fulfilled the required road/observation time. On road lessons will always start 10 minutes after the end of the school day. Students will meet at the designated starting spot and proceed to the Driver's Education car. There will be no less than 2 students and no more than 3 students in the car each time. The on road lessons will be 3 hours in duration and cannot be missed or made up. Attendance is MANDATORY for on road lessons.
Classroom hours will be held on Tuesday and Thursday throughout the entire 9 weeks with attendance at the classroom portions of the program MANDATORY . The classrooms will always start 10 minutes after the end of school bell in the designated Drivers Education classroom. Classroom Instruction will be 2 hours in duration. There will be 14 classes with students and 1 class called Parents Night which must be attended.
At least one parent and the student must attend one of the parent’s nights at any of the 3 schools, in the 9 weeks that the student is enrolled, on the dates listed on pages 3 and 4 of this handout for certificate of completion to be issued to student.
Failure to complete all sections of the program will result in no certificate being issued.
In the event of over enrollment students may be subjected to a lottery as to who is allowed to remain in the class. Call 220-0510 for specific details and if over enrollment were to occur…how to possibly avoid being in the group of students who may be moved to an alternate 9 weeks class due to over enrollment.

for completion & Insurance discount certificate at JBHS, MCHS, & SFHS

Students should be 15 years of age & have Florida learners permit by August 28th to enroll in the 1st 9 weeks course*
o Will begin Tuesday AUG. 28th at all 3 high schools. 40 students maximum.
o Classroom will be every Tuesday & Thursday from 3:00-5:00 at all 3 schools.
o On Road Driving will be on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at all 3 schools.
o Each student will sign up for (2) of these 3 hour driving days from 3:00-6:00pm at the beginning of each 9 weeks…students will know when their 2 drive slots are.
o (If students aren’t driving they will only have class Tuesday & Thursdays.)
o Parents Nights are from 7-9pm and at least 1 parent and student are required…dates & locations listed below…
o 9/18 @ JBHS _________ 9/20 @ SFHS _________ 9/25@MCHS _________
o Final EXAM will be Thursday October 18th with some driving slots possibly continuing until Thursday October 25th.
2nd 9 weeks course from Oct. 30 – Dec. 20
for completion & Insurance discount certificate at JBHS, MCHS, & SFHS

Students should be 15 years of age & have Florida learners permit by October 30th to enroll in the 2nd 9 weeks course*
o Will begin Tuesday OCT. 30th at all 3 high schools. 40 students max.
o Classroom will be every Tuesday & Thursday from 3:00-5:00 at all 3 schools.
o On Road Driving will be on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at all 3 schools.
o Each student will sign up for (2) of these 3 hour driving days from 3:00-6:00pm at the beginning of each 9 weeks…students will know when their 2 drive slots are.

o Will begin Tuesday April 8th at all 3 high schools. 40 students max.

o On Road Driving will be on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at all 3 schools.

Martin District Schools Drivers Education in Cooperation with A Treasure Coast Driving School… Rules, Policies & Procedures for full completion of program.
1. Drivers Education is taken for NO school credit and NO grades received will remain on transcripts. Only FULL completion of this class will enable students to receive a money saving insurance discount certificate. Full completion would mean any missed test, classroom days, up to (2) made up completely with written work given by instructor along with attendance at Parent’s Night by student and at least 1 parent as described in this hand out.
2. Class will start exactly at _____ pm after the regular school day and will last for 2 hours each time. Parents can pick up kids at _____ pm on classroom days. Driving times will be (2) three hours in length and will be set up later in the course. Students will drive on non-classroom days or Fridays or sometimes classroom days if needed from ____- ____pm and sometimes some students will have the chance to drive after class from ____-____pm
3. Being tardy to class will result in possible failing grade and discipline issues, just like any other class that is taken for credit in school. BEING TARDY (3) TIMES and or MISSING (2) classes will be an AUTOMATIC REMOVAL FROM CLASS... ONCE ENROLLED STUDENTS CAN NOT TAKE CLASS AGAIN IN ANY HIGH SCHOOL IN THE MARTIN COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT.
4. All rules which are followed during the regular day shall and will be observed during Drivers Education classes. See your student handbook.
5. STUDENTS SHOULD ARRANGE TO BE PICKED UP 2 HOURS AFTER CLASSROOM SEGMENTS BEGIN. You will know your required days of classroom and on road commitments months in advance.
6. DO NOT SCHEDULE DOCTORS, DENTIST, and appointments (etc.) on these days. The activity bus is available but you will be required to wait in a designated area for it. NO ONE WILL BE ALLLOWED TO ROAM OR WALK THE CAMPUS AFTER CLASS IS OVER EACH DAY.

7. Any class that is missed must be made up. More than (2) DAYS MISSED WILL NOT ALLOW STUDENTS AN INSURANCE CERTIFICATE FROM A.T.C.D.S.I. and student will be removed from the class. Make up work will include the Chapter Test missed plus any work that the instructor feels appropriate to solidify the material
missed, usually 8 pages front & back minimum of written work per 2 hours missed. No Insurance discount certificate will be issued if days are missed and not made up with appropriate make up work.
8. MCHS, SFHS, & JBHS Classrooms will meet on Tuesday and Thursday.
9. Driving on EARLY RELEASE days won’t usually happen unless arrangements are made by individual instructor and a group of students.
10. All students will have instructor announce daily a schedule for behind the wheel training once final class rosters have been determined. This schedule once completed will be for the entire semester. (You will know exactly what days you and your group will drive on well in advance so you can plan accordingly.) Sheets are usually sent home indicating drive dates & times.
11. Behind the wheel training will take place on days when you are not in the classroom (i.e. Monday & Wednesday, & certain Fridays. It will begin during the 2nd day of Drivers Ed. Students will be in the car 3 at a time and will be picked up and dropped off at a designated spot on campus.
12. FAILURE TO NOT SHOW FOR BEHIND WHEEL APPOINTMENTS WILL RESULT IN NO INSURANCE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE GIVEN. THESE TIMES ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE UP AND YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL TO OBATAIN YOUR CERTIFICATE @ $120.00 per 3 hour session.
13. Behind the wheel lessons will be 3 hours long per every 3 students. All students should arrange to be picked up after their (2) 3 hour driving blocks as mention before with the classroom. No one can be dropped off at work or at home, students will always be returned to high school where PARENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR PICK UP AND WELL BEING AFTER THE 3 HOUR DRIVING SLOT IS FINISHED. The instructor will not wait for parents to arrive.

14. Students will sign up at the end of the week or once final roster is determined for driving slots. You must have your learners permit to sign up on the driving sheet. Students who already have a license or have had their learners permit the longest shall be first to choose their groups driving slots.
15. Students who don’t have learners permits must pay ($40) for a 4 hour drug and alcohol class which is offered through A.T.C.D.S.I. Call 220-0510 or 398-9966 to sign up for a live classroom or do it online and take the learners permit test too for $49.95 www.ATreasureCoastDrivingSchool.com
16. Your learners permit will also cost you $20 you pay that to the Drivers License office on the day you take your Learners Permit Test. It’s a good idea to get an appointment now. PSL DHSMV phone is 398-2892 and they are open Tuesday-Friday from 7:00am until 6:00pm. Hobe Sound DHSMV office is open Monday-Friday from the hours of 8:30am – 4:30pm. It is usually a safe bet that they are booked AT LEAST one month in advance for everything that you would try to do.
17. It is strongly suggested that you call the Drivers License office and get your appointment for your Learners Permit, if you don’t already have it. They may be a month booked in advance. DO IT NOW! HOBE SOUND 546-7097 PSL 398-2892
18. Any questions ask you instructor and if they can’t answer them they will have an answer tomorrow.
19. All students will be required to keep a binder in class for materials covered and verification of missed assigments. The binder will be kept in the Drivers Education classroom and will be used each day by the students. This binder will need to be purchased by the student.
20. Parent’s Night is a requirement and at least 1 parent or an adult representative must attend one of the 3 Parent’s nights held (1 time) at all 3 high schools during the 9 weeks in which a student is enrolled. If you cannot attend your “home” high school than it is ok to attend another high schools night to fulfill your Parents Night requirements. Dates and locations are listed on pages 3 and 4 under each 9 weeks paragraph in this handout.
